A lot of people have given good answers but I’ll throw in an anecdote.
Growing up my dad would talk about how important it is to follow laws. Don’t do drugs, don’t drink and drive, etc, but even the smaller ones like don’t jay-walk and never litter.
On a car ride I noticed he was going like 5 mph over the speed limit and I pointed it out. Something like “if its important to follow every law why are you breaking the speed limit”.
And he responded something about how it’s not an actual law but a recommended speed or something. But I kept saying it was a law and he was breaking it. He got pretty upset and finally said if I didn’t drop he’d take away my Gameboy for a weekend or something.
It could’ve been he was just annoyed his kid wouldn’t shut up but it seems like textbook cognitive dissonance that he couldn’t reconcile the two ideas that every law should be followed and it’s ok to break the speed limit a little and it got him upset.
They canceled my man Kyle Gass for less fuck you Elon!
“People work in roles they don’t care about, for companies they have no investment in, to pay loans they shouldn’t have.”
That sounds like a fight club quote lol. I know you didn’t say “loans they shouldn’t have” but the cost of college is just stupidly high. It doesn’t have to be free but come on.
Pokemon Red was an amazing part of my childhood
Definitely The Mummy starring Brenden Fraiser and Rachel Weisz
Hell yeah smiling friends meme format!!!
Monday morning, my alarm goes off. As I reach to turn it off I see a bright pink teddy bear standing at my bedside. Before I can react it blasts me in the face with a ray of pure happiness as I forget that wages have not been keeping pace with productivity or inflation.
Raycon earbuds. Use them everyday for work, decent wireless earbuds, would recommend.
Proto-brain rot lol
It’s hard to talk about this without people getting upset but I think you were pretty genuine in trying to talk about it.
You might think if a company has tons of empty houses or more likely apartments that the company is losing money because nobody is paying rent but that’s not entirely accurate.
Companies do take losses since they have to pay property tax and stuff but they just use that as a tax write off against their profits so they don’t have to pay as much in taxes so it’s not even a complete loss for them. :/
Lol this was funny AND educational! Although reading it as comment instead of being stuck in that actual class probably helped.
That was your “quarter-life crisis”. Don’t worry your mid-life crisis is still on its way :D
Correct. IIRC there’s an auto mechanism that will cut all benefits by 23% or something. So you’re mom/dad getting $2,000 a month would now only get about $1,500.
There’s an idea about “autistic ai” or something where you give ai an objective like “get a person from point a to b as fast as you can” and the ai goes so fast the g force kills the person but the ai thinks it was a success because you never told it to keep the person alive.
Though I suppose that’s more human error. Something we take as a given but a machine will not.
I used reddit is fun, haven’t really been back outside the occasional Google search that links a post. It sucks and I do miss it, kind of like an old ex you look back fondly on but things just didn’t work out. I used to spend HOURS on the site and while lemmy is nice for keeping up with general world events and memes it just isn’t the same.
I like to rationalize that it helps keep me in the real world instead of spending most of my time on an app. Oh and sticking to a principle and trying to support those 3rd party app creators.
Why not give people actual hope for the future if that’s the problem?
It’s because video games turned into investment vehicles where companies want to make at least 50% return on their investment instead of create a fun and engaging peice of entertainment.
